The power sector regulator Thursday held
a public consultation on proposed revision of electricity rates as the
debt-ridden power generator, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), is trying
to avert an estimated loss of Rs. 78 billion this year.
The CEB is experiencing a major
financial crisis due to the high cost of fuel and the large subsidy
provided to the people, according to the Power and Energy Ministry. The
power supplier had losses of Rs. 61.224 billion last year. The PUSCL
Chairman told the National Radio that a report will be submitted to the
government after studying all proposals. The Commission is now
considering ways of minimizing electricity cost and to implement a
reasonable charging scheme.
