An inter-ministerial committee appointed to implement the recommendations of the World health Organization (WHO) on the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in several areas of the country are to meet with the people in the affected areas to obtain their views and suggestions, sources said.
Accordingly, the national programme on the study will be held at the Maithreepala Senanayake Madhya Maha Vidyalaya in Medawchchiya Sunday with the participation of the Health Minister Maithreepala Sirisena as the Chief Guest.
The WHO report which investigated the causes of the disease has been handed over to the Health Ministry and its recommendations are to be implemented soon, health officials said.
A recent study has found that over 200,000 people have currently been identified to be suffering from chronic kidney disease. The kidney disease was first identified in the 1990s in areas in the dry zone like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dehiattakandiya, Hambantota, Mahiyangane and Kantale.
The inter-ministerial committee included officials from the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Water Resource and Drainage, Environment, Local Government, Provincial Councils and Education.
